When an 80’s Music Video Resurfaces… and You’re In It

Written by:

Every once in a while the internet digs up something from the past that you had completely forgotten about.

Sometimes it’s an old photo. Sometimes it’s a yearbook quote.

And sometimes… it’s an 1980’s music video filmed in Miami where you accidentally appear as “Man at Bar.”

Yes, that actually happened.

Recently I stumbled across a music video on YouTube that was filmed in Miami in the mid-1980s, during a brief period when I was convinced I was going to pursue a career in film production.

At the time I was working as a production assistant on the shoot. My glamorous duties included:

helping build some of the goofy sets telling people where they were supposed to go running random errands assisting with bits and pieces of editing

Basically, the classic “do whatever needs to be done” PA job.

But somewhere along the way, someone had the bright idea to put me in front of the camera.

So there I am.

Suit.

Sunglasses.

Drink in hand.

Looking far cooler than a 15-year-old kid had any right to look.

My official role in the credits?

“Man at Bar.”

A role that lasts exactly 12 seconds.

You can spot me at 4:45 – 4:57 in the video.

Twelve seconds of cinematic history.

Or, as I prefer to call it:

“12 seconds of shame.”

Still, it’s a funny time capsule from a moment when I thought the path forward might involve cameras, editing bays, and production sets rather than courtrooms and legal briefs.

Life had other plans.

But every once in a while the past resurfaces online and reminds you of the strange roads you almost traveled.

And yes… if you watch the video more than once, there is a serious risk that you will start humming the song.

So consider this your official warning.

You have been warned.
