I had the honor of having my silver helmet presented for 25 years of service in Delta Sigma Pi by one of my best friends and Past Grand President Mitch Simmons and my wife Jacquie.
Many thanks to Jacquie, Mitch, Velvet, Barrett, Kimberly, Carrie, Jeff, Shane, Sylvia, Mary and Norm for celebrating with me!
See below for some info on the silver helmet (created by artist Scott White) and some highlights of the past 25 years……
About the Silver Helmet:
Normally, when a Deltasig is honored with this award, they get a very nice framed certificate. I was inspired by the creativity when Brother Paul Garcia, who is a USC Trojan, was given a large silver Trojan helmet when he was bestowed this honor.
Somewhere along the line, I must have mentioned this to my lovely wife, Jacquie. Apparently Jacquie conspired to commission this piece of art which was created by my favorite independent artist, Scott White.
If you have ever heard me speak at a Deltasig event you should know the symbology and meaning of the Star Wars helmet. Her having Scott create this just blew my mind.
Scott has been a good friend for 15 years and we have done many artistic projects together. We are the same age, have the same taste in music, movies and art in general. Scott is in a unique position to understand what I think looks cool especially my love for geekery. I could not think of a better person who could possibly pull this off and apparently neither could Jacquie.
When I called Scott and thanked him for his art I asked about his choice to make it look a little battle worn and tarnished. Scott replied; “Jacquie told me what it represents. I thought it should look like it’s been through some battles.” I could not agree more.
Needless to say, I was honored beyond belief.
It will be interesting to see if Jacquie’s actions inspires others when it comes to future silver helmet recipients. I look forward to what creativity that might invoke!
Congratulations, well deserved and cool honor!
